The present covered market was built in 1841 on the site originally set aside by Louis XIV and where Louis XV had small houses built to house merchants and their foodstuffs.
As in the past, the four market halls are named after the types of goods sold there: meat, flour, herbs, fish. Also in the flour hall was the King’s Weigh House, where the standard weights and measures were kept. The food market remains an attraction to this day – a real treat for all five senses – every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday morning.
At 7 Rue Ducis and at 20 Rue au Pain you will find niches with statues of the Blessed Virgin.
